5 Steps to Store Skis, Snowboards, and Skates for the Off-Season

  1. Clean skis and snowboards with base cleaner or warm water, then dry completely. Dirt and old wax left on can damage the base over months of storage.

  2. Apply a fresh layer of storage wax to skis and snowboards, but do not scrape it off. The wax layer prevents the base from drying out and oxidizing during summer.

  3. Store skis and snowboards upright or flat in a cool, dry place, away from radiators and damp basements. Loosen bindings a few clicks to reduce spring tension.

  4. Dry ice skate blades thoroughly with a clean cloth, then apply a light coat of machine oil to the edges. Avoid getting oil on the boot, and remove blade guards before storage.

  5. Store ice skates in a ventilated bag or with blades exposed to air. Never leave them damp in a closed bag, as that causes rust and smelly boots.
