5 Steps to Store a Chainsaw for Winter

Drain the fuel tank and run the engine until it stalls Ethanol gas turns to sticky varnish in weeks, clogging carburetors. Draining the tank and running it dry clears the carb bowl and fuel lines.

Clean the bar groove and oil holes Remove sawdust and debris from the bar to prevent rust and ensure proper oil flow next season.

Loosen the chain tension Release the chain tension to reduce stress on the bar and chain during storage.

Store the chainsaw hanging or on its side Never store it resting on the bar tip, as this can bend the bar or damage the tip.

Add fogging oil for long-term storage Pull the spark plug, squirt fogging oil into the cylinder, and pull the cord a few times to coat the walls. This prevents rust and is cheap insurance for a first-pull start next spring.
