5 Steps to Shock Your Pool After Rain

  1. Test the water first Rain dilutes chlorine, adds contaminants, and can lower pH. Always test before shocking.

  2. Adjust pH to 7.2–7.4 Shock works best in this range. If pH is off, correct it before adding shock.

  3. Use a non-stabilized chlorine Calcium hypochlorite is a good choice. Avoid stabilized chlorine if you already have high cyanuric acid.

  4. Double the dose for cloudy water or heavy storms If the pool looks cloudy or you had a big storm, use twice the normal amount of shock.

  5. Run the pump overnight and brush the next morning Let the pump circulate the shock for at least 8 hours. Brush the walls the next day to remove any settled debris.
