5 Steps to Shock Your Pool After Heavy Rain
Test your water first Rain usually raises pH and lowers chlorine. If pH is above 7.6, bring it down before shocking — chlorine works best below that.
Add enough shock to reach breakpoint level Use a calcium hypochlorite shock or dichlor if you need stabilizer. Aim for 10-15 ppm depending on your pool size and stabilizer level.
Run the pump overnight Keep the pump running to circulate the shock and filter out contaminants.
Brush the walls and floor the next morning This removes any algae or debris that settled during the storm.
Don’t swim until chlorine drops to 1-3 ppm Check levels before entering. For post-storm oxidation without a heavy chlorine swing, keep non-chlorine shock on hand — but for preventing a bloom, chlorine shock is the way.
