5 Steps to Safely Move Houseplants Outdoors

  1. Wait for warm nights Only start the transition after nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F.

  2. Start in full shade Place the plant in a shady, sheltered spot on day one. Direct sun will burn leaves that are used to indoor light.

  3. Limit first exposure to 1–2 hours Bring the plant outside for just an hour or two, then return it indoors. This prevents shock from wind and temperature swings.

  4. Gradually increase time and light each day Add an hour or two of outdoor time daily, and move the plant into slightly brighter light over a week to ten days.

  5. Watch the weather Wind and sudden temperature drops are the biggest threats. Skip outdoor time on blustery or cold days.
