5 Steps to Prime a Pool Pump That Won’t Pull Water
Turn off the pump and open the lid Fill the pump basket completely with a hose, then close the lid tightly.
Open the air bleed valve on the filter This lets trapped air escape as water refills the system.
Turn the pump back on at low speed High speed can cause cavitation and prevent priming. Let it run with the bleed valve open until a steady stream of water flows out, then close the valve.
Check for repeated loss of suction Inspect the pump lid O-ring and drain plug for cracks or loose fittings. Also check the skimmer basket and weir door for blockages.
Never run the pump dry for more than 30 seconds Running dry can destroy the mechanical seal, leading to an expensive repair.
