5 Steps to Patch a Pool Liner Underwater

  1. Locate the leak Use food coloring or leak dye near the suspected area. Watch for the dye being pulled into the hole.

  2. Clean the area underwater Scrub the liner around the leak with a pool scrubber or your fingers. Remove any dirt or algae so the patch adheres.

  3. Cut an oversized patch Cut a patch that overlaps the hole by at least one inch on all sides. A dime-sized puncture needs a patch about three inches across.

  4. Apply underwater-rated glue Use glue from an underwater vinyl liner patch kit. Apply it to both the patch and the liner. Press the patch on and hold for 30 seconds.

  5. Let it cure for 24 hours Do not run the pump during this time. Rushing the cure will cause the patch to fail.
