5 Steps to Lower High Alkalinity in a Pool

  1. Lower pH with acid first Add muriatic acid or dry acid to bring pH down to 7.0–7.2. High total alkalinity (180+ ppm) will fight each dose, so expect pH to creep back up.

  2. Aerate aggressively Run waterfalls, point return jets upward, or use a submersible pump to break the water surface. Aeration drives off carbon dioxide, which raises pH but lowers TA.

  3. Repeat the acid-aerate cycle Add acid, aerate, test. Keep repeating until TA drops to 80–120 ppm. This is tedious but the only reliable method.

  4. Test between each dose Never add more acid than the label recommends at once. Small, slow doses prevent overshooting and damage.

  5. Fine-tune pH after TA is fixed Once TA is in range, adjust pH normally. High TA pools are stubborn, not unmanageable.
