5 Steps to Fix a Pool Pump That Won't Prime

Check the skimmer and pump baskets Remove any debris blocking the baskets. A clogged basket prevents water flow and lets air into the system.

Inspect the pump lid O-ring A cracked, dried, or misaligned O-ring is the most common cause of air leaks. Lubricate it with silicone pool grease and reseat the lid.

Verify the pool water level If the water level is below the skimmer opening, the pump will suck air instead of water. Top off the pool to keep the skimmer submerged.

Find suction-side leaks Listen for a hissing sound near the pump or spray shaving cream around joints and fittings. If the cream gets sucked in, that’s your leak.

Re-prime the pump correctly Turn off the pump immediately if it runs dry for more than a couple minutes. Fill the pump basket with water before restarting to avoid damaging the impeller or motor seal.
