5 Steps to Fix a Pool Pump That Runs but Won't Move Water
Bleed the air lock Turn the pump off, open the air bleed valve on top of the filter, then crack the pump lid slightly to release trapped air. Water should start flowing once the air is gone.
Check the skimmer basket and pump basket A clogged basket or a stuck skimmer weir can choke off water flow even with the pump running. Remove any debris.
Verify suction-side valves are open Someone might have bumped a valve closed. Make sure all suction-side valves are fully open.
Inspect the impeller for jams If the easy fixes fail, a small rock or piece of mulch may be jamming the impeller. You’ll have to pull the pump housing apart to check.
Don’t let the pump run dry Running the pump without water for more than a minute or two will melt the seal quickly. Shut it off if water isn’t moving.
