5 Steps to Fix a Pool Pump Air Leak

Check the pump lid O-ring first Turn off the pump, open the lid, and remove the O-ring. Clean the groove and inspect for cracks, flat spots, or grit. Replace it if worn, and apply a thin coat of pool-specific silicone lubricant.

Verify the pool water level If the water is below the skimmer, the pump will suck air. Top off the pool to keep the skimmer submerged.

Clear the skimmer and pump baskets A clogged basket restricts flow and can cause air to enter. Empty both baskets and ensure they are seated properly.

Tighten the pump lid and fittings by hand Tighten the lid hand-tight only—do not use a wrench. Also check that all suction-side unions and valves are snug.

Test for underground pipe leaks last If the above steps fail, a small leak in the underground pipe is possible but less common. Always try the free fixes first.
