5 Steps to Clean and Store Your Wood Stove for Summer

Remove ash after 48 hours Wait at least 48 hours after the last fire, then scoop ash into a metal bucket with a tight lid. Store the bucket outdoors for at least a week before disposal—coals can stay hot longer than you think.

Clean the firebox and glass Vacuum loose dust and soot with a shop vac that has a fine filter or a dedicated ash vac. Use a wire brush on firebrick for stubborn creosote, and clean the viewing window with ceramic-glass cleaner—never abrasive pads, which scratch.

Inspect firebrick, gasket, and flue Check firebrick for cracks, the door gasket for gaps, and the damper or flue for blockages. If creosote buildup is thicker than 1/8 inch, schedule a professional chimney sweep—this is not a DIY job.

Close the damper and store dry Close the damper or flue completely to keep out rain, animals, and drafts. If your stove has a catalytic combustor, remove and store it in a dry bag.

Leave the door slightly ajar Keep the door slightly open to prevent stagnant moisture, and tape a note over it reminding you to open the damper before the first fire next season.
