5 Steps to Backwash a DE Filter Correctly

Turn off the pump before moving the valve Always shut the pump off before switching between backwash, rinse, and filter settings to avoid damaging the grids.

Backwash until the sight glass runs clear Set the valve to backwash, turn the pump on, and run it until the water in the sight glass is clear, usually 2-3 minutes.

Rinse for 30 seconds to settle the grids Shut the pump off, set the valve to rinse, then run the pump for 30 seconds. This settles the filter grids before returning to normal operation.

Add fresh DE through the skimmer A backwash removes all old diatomaceous earth. Without adding new DE, your filter is useless and your pool will turn cloudy. Measure the right amount—typically 1 pound per 10 square feet of filter area—and pour it slowly into the skimmer while the pump is running.

Only backwash when pressure rises 8-10 psi over clean pressure Backwashing too often wastes DE and water. Wait until the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi above the clean filter pressure.
