5 Signs It’s Time to Replace an Outdoor Extension Cord

Replace outdoor extension cords every two to three years. UV light and weather degrade the insulation over time, making older cords a shock or fire risk.

Look for cracks, discoloration, or fraying in the cord’s rubber. Any visible damage means the cord is no longer safe for outdoor use.

Check for exposed wires or a plug that feels loose or hot after use. These are clear signs the cord is failing and should be thrown away immediately.

Toss the cord if it feels stiff or brittle. That indicates the insulation has broken down and can no longer protect against moisture or damage.

Never patch outdoor cords with tape. Tape fails in rain or sun. Buy a new cord rated for outdoor use, marked with a “W” or “WA” on the label.
