5 Reasons Your Pool Pump Loses Prime

Air leaks on the suction side Almost all prime loss is caused by air sneaking in before water reaches the impeller. This breaks the vacuum needed to pull water from the pool.

Dried-out or dirty pump lid O-ring The O-ring is the most common leak point. Clean it, apply silicone lubricant, and reseat the lid firmly.

Loose or leaking drain plug A loose drain plug lets air in. Check that it is tight and not cracked.

Failing shaft seal Look for wet spots or corrosion on the pump body. A leaking shaft seal lets air in and must be replaced.

Low pool water level If water drops below the skimmer, the pump sucks air instead. Raise the water level and re-prime the pump.
