5 Reasons to Use a 12-Gauge Cord for a 1500W Space Heater

  1. A 1500W space heater draws 12.5 amps, which exceeds the safe continuous load for a 14-gauge cord. 14-gauge cord is rated for 15 amps, but continuous loads (over three hours) require derating to 80%, or 12 amps. You are already over that limit.

  2. A 12-gauge cord is rated for 20 amps, or 16 amps derated, giving you plenty of headroom. This margin prevents overheating and reduces fire risk.

  3. Voltage drop is not the main concern here. At 25 feet, a 14-gauge cord drops about 2.5%, which is acceptable. The real issue is ampacity, not voltage.

  4. A 14-gauge cord might not fail immediately, but it is a fire risk you do not need. Space heaters already pull maximum current. Do not cheap out on the cord.

  5. This is not where you save ten bucks. Spending a little more on a 12-gauge cord is cheap insurance against a potential fire.
