5 Reasons Not to Daisy-Chain Extension Cords for a Pressure Washer

  1. Voltage drop starves the motor A 10-amp load on 100 feet of 14-gauge wire drops about 9 volts, a 7.5% loss. Most manufacturers recommend staying under 5%.

  2. Motors run hot under low voltage Low voltage forces the motor to draw more current to compensate. This overheats the insulation and can damage the pressure washer.

  3. Extra connection points add risk Each cord connection is a weak spot for resistance and heat buildup. Two cords in series double the failure points.

  4. 14-gauge wire isn’t enough for long runs Even though 14-gauge can handle 15 amps, the voltage drop over 100 feet is too high for a 10-amp motor. It will run hot and may fail.

  5. A single heavy-gauge cord is safer Use one 12-gauge cord rated for 100 feet, or better, 10-gauge for headroom. It costs more but protects your equipment and wiring.
