5 Reasons Non-ECC RAM Is Fine for Your Proxmox Homelab

  1. The real-world risk of a bit flip is tiny Unless you’re running production workloads where a random error could cost you money, the odds of a memory error corrupting something important in a homelab are absurdly low.

  2. ZFS does not require ECC memory The “ZFS needs ECC” claim is mostly FUD. ZFS works fine without it, and regular scrubbing handles any data corruption that might occur.

  3. ECC hardware is expensive and restrictive ECC requires a server-grade CPU and motherboard. AMD Ryzen sometimes supports it, but Intel consumer almost never does. You’ll pay more for the hardware and may lose performance.

  4. Your money is better spent elsewhere For a homelab running a few VMs for testing or media serving, that cash is better used on more RAM or a bigger SSD instead of ECC.
