5 Reasons DDR5 Won't Speed Up Game Load Times on an NVMe SSD

  1. Load times are limited by SSD read speed and CPU decompression, not RAM bandwidth. A decent NVMe SSD (PCIe 3.0 or faster) is already the bottleneck.

  2. DDR5 does not make your SSD faster. RAM speed has no effect on how quickly data moves from the drive to the system.

  3. Decompression work is CPU-bound, not memory-bound. Faster RAM won’t help the CPU unzip game files any quicker.

  4. The performance gain from DDR4 to DDR5 for loading games is negligible—maybe a tenth of a second. You are already in the zone of diminishing returns.

  5. Money spent on upgrading to DDR5 for faster game loads is better used on a faster GPU or a better monitor. Only consider DDR5 if you are building a new PC and it costs the same as DDR4.
