5 Reasons 16GB Is the New Minimum for VST-Heavy Production

  1. Modern sample libraries are RAM-hungry Kontakt, Omnisphere, and Spitfire patches can each consume 2–3GB. One orchestral instance alone eats that much.

  2. 8GB gets maxed out before you start mixing Stack a few synth layers, effects, and your DAW overhead, and 8GB is gone. You’ll hit crackles, stutters, and “out of memory” errors.

  3. Lightweight synths are the exception, not the rule If you only use a few Serum presets with no samples and few tracks, 8GB might barely work. But “many VST plugins” means you need headroom.

  4. 16GB stops you from fighting your computer At 16GB, you can focus on making music instead of troubleshooting crashes. 32GB is becoming common for serious work, but 16GB is the practical floor.

  5. Saving money on RAM is a false economy A frozen project at 2 AM is not worth the sixty bucks you saved. Future you will not be grateful.
