5 Quick Fixes for a Pool Skimmer Sucking Air

  1. Raise the water level The skimmer needs water covering at least half its opening to pull water instead of air. Bump the water level up and the air noise will likely stop immediately.

  2. Clean the skimmer basket A clogged basket restricts flow and causes cavitation. Empty it and see if the problem goes away.

  3. Check the weir door If the flap inside the skimmer is stuck open, it lets air in. Make sure it moves freely and seals properly.

  4. Tighten the pump lid O-ring and drain plugs A tiny air leak on the suction side will whistle. Check these cheap seals before assuming a bigger problem.

  5. Inspect for underground cracks If all the simple fixes fail, you might have a crack in the suction line. Call a pro for this, but don’t skip the cheap checks first.
