Todd Rundgren played every instrument and sang all vocals on the first three sides of the double album. He handled guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and all lead and backing vocals without outside musicians.

The fourth side was recorded live in the studio with a full band. Rundgren brought in session players and friends for these tracks, making it the only side not entirely performed by him.

Rundgren also produced the entire record himself. He oversaw all recording and mixing, giving the album a cohesive, personal sound.

The album was released in 1972 and became his commercial breakthrough. It reached number 29 on the Billboard 200 and produced the hit single “Hello It’s Me.”

This one-man-band approach was rare for a major-label release at the time. Most artists relied on session musicians, but Rundgren’s solo performance showcased his multi-instrumental talent.
