The album was recorded entirely at Pye Studios No. 2 in London. Sessions ran from roughly March to October 1968.

The band worked in the smaller of Pye’s two studios. Studio No. 2 was known for its intimate, less polished sound.

Ray Davies produced the sessions himself. He took full control after the band’s earlier producer, Shel Talmy, was dismissed.

The recording process was unhurried and experimental. The Kinks spent months layering instruments and vocals, a luxury they rarely had before.

The album was a commercial failure upon release. It sold poorly in 1968, but later became one of the band’s most celebrated works.
