5 Facts About Stockhausen's Leadership of the WDR Electronic Music Studio

Stockhausen worked at the West German Radio’s Studio for Electronic Music in Cologne starting in 1953. He was a permanent collaborator there for 14 years.

He served as the studio’s artistic director from 1963 to 1977. This 14-year tenure shaped the direction of early electronic music.

The studio was a pioneering center for electronic composition in the 1950s and 1960s. Stockhausen used it to create landmark works like “Gesang der Jünglinge.”

His leadership attracted other major composers to work at the studio. Collaborators included Gottfried Michael Koenig and Karlheinz Stockhausen’s own students.
