DJ Shadow recorded Endtroducing mostly in a friend’s basement. The album was made in the basement of Dan “The Automator” Nakamura’s home in Sacramento, California.

The basement setup was minimal and low-budget. Shadow used an Akai MPC60 sampler, a turntable, and a mixer, relying on creativity over expensive gear.

Every sound came from vinyl records. He sampled from his extensive collection of old records, creating entirely new compositions without live instruments.

The album was made without a computer. All sequencing and editing were done on the MPC60, a hardware sampler with limited memory and no visual interface.

Endtroducing became the first entirely sampled album. It earned a Guinness World Record as the first album composed completely from samples, proving a basement studio could produce groundbreaking music.
