Brian Eno pressed only 500 copies of Music for Films in 1976. These copies were sent exclusively to filmmakers, not sold to the public.

The commercial release of the album came two years later. It was released in September 1978 on EG Records.

The limited run was intended as a tool for film scoring. Eno wanted filmmakers to use the tracks as temp music or inspiration.

The 1976 pressing is extremely rare and collectible. Because only 500 copies exist, original pressings are highly sought after.
