5 Causes of Chainsaw Vibration

Dull chain A dull chain forces the saw to grab and buck, causing excessive vibration. If cutters are round instead of square or you get fine dust instead of chips, sharpen or replace the chain.

Incorrect chain tension Too loose and the chain slaps; too tight and it binds. Both create vibration. Adjust tension so the chain fits snugly but pulls freely.

Worn sprocket tip A hooked or worn sprocket tip prevents the chain from running true. Inspect it and replace if damaged.

Pinched bar groove A worn or pinched bar groove also misdirects the chain. Check for wear and replace the bar if needed.

Old or wrong fuel mix Stale gas or an incorrect fuel mix makes the engine run rough, which feels like vibration. Drain and refill with fresh mix if the saw has been sitting.
