4 Ways to Stop Your Pool Cleaner From Getting Stuck on the Main Drain

  1. Reduce suction at the pump Adjust the flow valve to lower suction. More suction doesn’t mean better cleaning—it just glues the cleaner to the drain.

  2. Fix the hose length and floats A hose that’s too short or too long causes the cleaner to circle or tangle near the drain. Add extra floats near the drain to keep the hose buoyant.

  3. Check the drain cover Older or shallow drain covers let the cleaner’s wheels or skirt get wedged under the edge. A drain cover guard or vortex plate breaks the suction.

  4. Dial back the cleaner’s pressure or suction setting If your cleaner has an adjustment, turn it down a notch. This prevents it from getting stuck without sacrificing cleaning performance.
