4 Things to Know About Shiny Spots on Cloth Mousepads

  1. A shiny spot is permanent damage, not dirt. The fibers have been compressed and polished flat from your wrist or mouse feet. Washing removes oils but cannot restore the flattened texture.

  2. Scrubbing or rubbing makes the spot worse. Rubbing only polishes the fibers further, increasing the shine. A stiff brush with detergent might offer slight improvement, but the texture will never return.

  3. The spot does not affect mouse tracking as much as you think. Despite the visual and tactile difference, most mice still track accurately over the shiny area. You can often just live with it.

  4. Your only real fix is to replace or flip the pad. If the shine bothers you, buy a new pad. If the pad is reversible, flipping it gives you a fresh surface.
