4 Things to Know About Pool Chlorine Levels

  1. Keep free chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm That range kills bacteria and algae without irritating eyes or wasting money.

  2. Adjust based on your stabilizer If you use chlorine tabs with cyanuric acid, aim for 2–3 ppm. With liquid chlorine and little CYA, 1–2 ppm is fine.

  3. Test once a week unless conditions change After heavy use or a storm, test sooner. Below 1 ppm lets bacteria grow; above 4–5 ppm is wasteful and harsh.

  4. Skimping on the low end is the real risk Staying above 1 ppm is more important than hitting an exact number. Most backyard pools with standard pucks do best at 2–3 ppm.
