4 Things to Know About Over-Under Coiling Extension Cords
Over-under coiling is the only correct way to store extension cords. The method alternates the twist direction with each loop to prevent internal wire damage.
The common elbow-wrap method twists wires inside the cord. Repeated twisting creates kinks that eventually become breaks.
One loop goes over your hand (clockwise), the next goes under (counter-clockwise). This cancels out twisting so the cord lies flat with no tangles when you pull it out.
For cords 25 to 50 feet long, over-under coiling is faster than a reel. For cords 100 feet or longer, consider a cord reel instead.
