4 Things to Know About Extension Cord Length and Gauge

  1. Keep a standard 14-gauge extension cord under 50 feet when pulling 15 amps. Beyond that, voltage drop exceeds 3% and causes motors to run hotter, lights to dim, and tools to lose power.

  2. Voltage drop is the main problem with long cords. A 14-gauge cord at 100 feet and 15 amps creates a 7% drop, which is unsafe and inefficient.

  3. If you need 100 feet, use a 12-gauge cord instead. It handles the full load at that length without excessive voltage drop.
