4 Steps to Winterize a Sand Filter Pool
Lower the water level Drain the pool to about 6 inches below the skimmer opening. This prevents ice damage to the skimmer and return lines.
Backwash the sand filter Run a thorough backwash cycle to clean the filter media and remove debris. This prevents fouling during storage.
Drain the filter tank Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the filter tank to let all water out. Leave the multiport valve set to “winter” or “closed” position.
Add winterizing chemicals and cover Treat the water with algaecide and winterizing chemicals, then install a secure pool cover. No heater maintenance is needed.
