4 Steps to Test an Extension Cord With a Multimeter

Set your multimeter to continuity mode or the lowest ohms range. Unplug the cord completely before testing.

Check each wire for continuity. Touch one probe to the hot prong and the other to the hot end of the outlet. Repeat for neutral and ground. No beep means that wire is broken.

Test for shorts by touching one probe to hot and the other to neutral. A beep means the wires are touching inside — a fire hazard. Repeat for hot-to-ground and neutral-to-ground.

If all continuity checks pass and no shorts exist, the cord is fine. If you find a break or short, recycle it — splicing a damaged extension cord is not worth the risk.
