4 Steps to Safely Clean an Extension Cord

  1. Unplug the cord from both ends before cleaning. This prevents electrical shock and damage to the cord.

  2. Wipe with a damp cloth and a tiny drop of dish soap. Mix soap with water, dampen a cloth (not dripping), and wipe the cord clean. For greasy spots, scrub gently with a soft brush or sponge.

  3. Rinse with plain water and dry completely. Wipe again with a damp cloth to remove soap residue. Let the cord dry overnight before rolling or plugging it in.

  4. Avoid harsh chemicals and submersion. Do not use bleach, solvents, or abrasive pads, as they can damage insulation and create a shock hazard. Never submerge the cord in water.
