4 Steps to Kill Mold in a Cooler With Bleach

Scrub loose gunk with dish soap and water before using bleach. This removes surface debris so the bleach can reach the mold spores.

Mix 1 tablespoon bleach per quart of water (or 1/4 cup per gallon) and swish it around. Let it sit for 15 minutes to kill the mold, then rinse thoroughly to avoid bleach residue near food.

Air dry the cooler completely with the lid open for a day or two. Storing it dry prevents mold from returning. If the smell lingers, scrub with a baking soda paste after bleaching.

Toss a crumpled paper towel or small desiccant pack inside before sealing the cooler for storage. Mold needs moisture, and this keeps the interior dry.
