4 Reasons Not to Run a Salt Chlorine Generator in Cold Water

  1. Electrolysis slows drastically below 60°F The chemical reaction that converts salt into chlorine becomes nearly useless in cold water. You waste electricity and get almost no chlorine output.

  2. Cold operation scales up the cell plates Pumping current through the cell without effective chlorine production accelerates calcium buildup. This scaling shortens the cell’s lifespan.

  3. Manufacturers warn against it Most brands specify not to run the generator below 50–60°F. Some will void your warranty if you ignore this limit.
