The album was recorded at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York City. This studio was a converted church known for its excellent acoustics.

The sessions took place on March 2 and April 22, 1959. Both sessions were completed in just two days.

The band played the music with minimal rehearsal. Miles Davis gave the musicians only brief sketches of melodies and chord progressions.

The first session produced “So What” and “Freddie Freeloader,” while the second yielded the remaining three tracks. The album’s final track listing was assembled from these two dates.
