3 Ways to Pre-Chill a Cooler Before Packing
Freeze the empty cooler If you have freezer space, put the empty cooler inside for 12 hours. This drops the internal temperature so fresh ice won’t immediately melt cooling the walls and air.
Use a sacrificial bag of ice No freezer space? Buy a bag of ice the day before, dump it in, and close the lid for 6–8 hours. Dump the melted water before loading fresh ice and food. That first bag soaks up the heat instead of your good ice.
Allow extra time for rotomolded coolers Rotomolded coolers (Yeti, RTIC, etc.) have huge thermal mass. They need a longer pre-chill or multiple ice bags. The principle is the same: get the cooler itself cold before putting anything inside.
