3 Ways to Check for Free RAM Slots Without Opening Your PC

  1. Use CPU-Z Download the free, lightweight CPU-Z tool. Open it and go to the SPD tab. It lists every slot on your motherboard. If a slot shows no data, it is free.

  2. Check the SPD tab details Each slot is labeled, like “Slot #1” and “Slot #2.” If only one has data, you have an open slot. If both show data, you must replace existing sticks, not add.

  3. Know the laptop limitation CPU-Z cannot detect soldered RAM on laptops. For desktops, this method is instant and requires no physical access. Physical inspection is still the most reliable, but CPU-Z gives you the answer without touching the case.
