3 Things to Know About GFCI Extension Cords

  1. A GFCI extension cord protects whatever you plug into it, even if the wall outlet lacks GFCI protection. It will trip if there’s a ground fault downstream.

  2. The cord only protects devices plugged directly into it, not other outlets on the same circuit. That’s still better than no protection.

  3. For occasional outdoor use, a GFCI cord is fine. If you use the outlet regularly, replace the outlet itself with a GFCI instead.
