A GFCI extension cord protects whatever you plug into it, even if the wall outlet lacks GFCI protection. It will trip if there’s a ground fault downstream.

The cord only protects devices plugged directly into it, not other outlets on the same circuit. That’s still better than no protection.

For occasional outdoor use, a GFCI cord is fine. If you use the outlet regularly, replace the outlet itself with a GFCI instead.
