3 Steps to Fix a False Low Salt Reading on a Salt Chlorine Generator

Clean the salt cell first If your generator says “low salt” but a manual test shows otherwise, the cell is likely coated in calcium scale. This buildup interferes with conductivity readings, making the system think salt levels are low.

Soak the cell in acid Remove the cell and inspect for white or crusty deposits. Clean it with a 1:4 mix of muriatic acid and water, or a dedicated cell cleaner, for 10-15 minutes, then rinse and reinstall. This fixes the problem nine times out of ten.

Check temperature and flow switch If cleaning doesn’t work, verify the water temperature is above 60°F, as most generators stop reading accurately below that. Also ensure the flow switch is clean and moves freely.
