3 Steps to Eliminate a Smelly Cooler
Scrub with a bleach solution Mix a capful of bleach per gallon of water. Wipe down every surface, let it sit for ten minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This kills the mildew or bacteria causing the smell.
Dry it completely with the lid open Leave the cooler propped open in the sun or near a fan for a full day. Storing it closed while damp will bring the smell back.
Use baking soda or newspaper between trips Toss in an open box of baking soda or crumpled newspaper to absorb odors during storage.
