3 Steps to Diagnose Whether You Need More RAM

  1. Open Task Manager and check memory usage Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc on Windows or open Activity Monitor on Mac, click the Performance tab, and look at the “Memory” section. If usage is consistently over 80% and your system is sluggish, RAM is likely the bottleneck.

  2. Watch the memory graph during normal work If it stays near 90-100% and disk usage spikes (Windows shows “Hard fault” or “Page file” activity), you are starving for RAM. If memory is at 60% and the system still crawls, the problem is probably your CPU or disk instead.

  3. Monitor for a full day, not five minutes Do not buy 16GB just because 8GB feels slow—diagnose first. If the numbers say you are fine, save your money. If they scream “swap file hell,” then upgrade.
