3 Steps for Removing Calcium Scale From Tile

Start with a pumice stone for light scale on hard, smooth surfaces like glass or ceramic tile. Wet the stone and scrub gently — it removes scale without etching the tile.

For heavier scale, use muriatic acid diluted 1:10 with water in a plastic bucket. Apply with a sponge or sprayer, let it sit 30–60 seconds, then scrub with a nylon brush — never a wire brush. Rinse thoroughly and neutralize with baking soda. Wear rubber gloves, goggles, and old clothes.

Avoid acid on natural stone, colored grout, or any surface you are unsure about. Test in an inconspicuous spot first. For plaster or pebble finishes, hire a professional — one wrong acid wash ruins the surface.
