File only until the tool stops you Place the depth gauge tool over the cutter and raker. File the raker flat until the file hits the top of the tool—that is your exact stop. Do not file past it.

Keep every raker the same height Use the same number of file strokes on each raker. Check final height with a depth gauge key or feeler gauge. A sharp chain with uneven rakers cuts worse than a dull one.
