3 Reasons to Use ECC RAM for Validator Nodes
Memory errors cause real penalties A single bit flip can lead to missed attestations, invalid blocks, or accidental equivocation. Both Solana and Ethereum punish unreliability, and memory errors are a quiet way to trigger those penalties.
Consumer DDR5 is not full ECC On-die ECC in DDR5 corrects some errors but not all. For serious validator setups, this is not enough protection against data corruption.
The cost difference is trivial compared to risk ECC RAM costs $50-100 more than non-ECC. A single slashing event or a week of inactivity leak can cost far more than that. Do not save pennies on the component keeping your node honest.
