3 Reasons Not to Run a Salt Water Chlorine Generator in Cold Water

  1. It can damage the cell Most manufacturers require water temperatures of at least 50–60°F (10–15°C). Running the generator in colder water risks damaging the cell and building up hard-to-clean scale.

  2. It produces zero chlorine Cold water slows the chemical reaction needed for chlorine production. The system may keep trying to run anyway, which wears it out faster with no benefit.

  3. Manual shocking is the better option If your pool or spa is under 50°F, turn the SWG off and shock manually when needed. This keeps your cell alive longer and avoids an early replacement.
