3 Reasons Non-ECC RAM Is Fine for Your RTX 4090 Rig
Consumer non-ECC DDR5 works perfectly well for deep learning with a single RTX 4090 or even a few. The chance of a silent memory error crashing an 8-hour training run is basically zero.
The GPU already handles its own error correction on VRAM, and the CPU side isn’t under the same 24/7 high-stress memory load as a server. ECC offers no real benefit for most ML workloads.
ECC DDR5 costs more and runs slightly slower. Only consider it for a multi-socket, multi-GPU datacenter setup running critical models around the clock. Save your money for more VRAM or a faster SSD.
