3 Reasons Non-ECC RAM Is Fine for a Home NAS

The risk of a flipped bit corrupting ZFS data is real but astronomically rare in practice. Your drives are far more likely to fail than your RAM.

For media storage, backups, or a Plex server, spend your money on more drives or a UPS instead. ECC matters for production workloads, not home use.

If the price difference is small and your platform supports ECC, go for it. Otherwise, don’t feel bad about using regular RAM.
